'Gold standard' imaging cuts surgery risks

Tuesday 5th July, 2022

Adelaide Day Surgery is offering patients access to minimally-invasive surgery thanks to a new cutting-edge imaging machine.

The fluoroscan technology allows specialists to pinpoint treatment, guided by a continuous X-ray on a monitor that shows body parts in high detail.

"We are always looking for new ways to increase our service offerings at Adelaide Day Surgery and I am confident this machine will be extremely beneficial for staff and patients alike," CEO/Director of Nursing Emma Lyndon said.

"It gives surgeons the ability to perform tasks to the best of their ability when it comes to bone fractures and positioning plates, screws and pins. It really is the gold standard of treatment."

These fluoroscopy procedures allow the clinic's medical staff to scan many body systems and evaluate specific areas, reducing invasiveness during surgery.

"We no longer need to do an open-wound procedure to repair a fracture," Ms Lyndon said.

"This means because there is no wound or sutures there is a reduced risk of infection and delayed healing."

It also means more patients can now be treated onsite at the private facility – part of the Cura Day Hospitals Group – instead of being referred elsewhere.

"Licensed staff can freely admit patients," Ms Lyndon said.

"If someone comes in to see a surgeon and they require treatment that is beneficial with a fluoroscan machine, they no longer need to be directed to another hospital, instead they can be placed into theatre.

"Our orthopaedic and plastic and reconstructive surgeons have been using the fluoroscan machine regularly and the feedback has been really positive."
