Private hospitals celebrate NAIDOC Week

Wednesday 20th July, 2022

Buderim Private Hospital celebrated NAIDOC Week 2022 by giving maternity patients the chance to welcome their newborn babies into the world with acknowledgement of the custodians of the local land.

The Sunshine Coast facility is sited on the ancestral home area of theKabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi peoples in south-east Queensland.

In consultation with local Elders, the hospital has produced baby milestone cards reading 'Born on Kabi Kabi Country' to put in a pack given to parents to help mark notable events in the first year of their baby's life.

Proud parents Danielle and Curtis were among the first to receive a milestone card, for their baby Maddison.

"We understand how important it is to respect our history and heritage and think this will be a wonderful memory forMaddison in the future to reflect on how she was born in Buderim on Kabi Kabi land," they said.

"The stump seats in our Yarning Circlecame from a30-year-old eucalyptus treethat once grew onalocalproperty," Ms Mohsen said.

"The tree was healthy and well established when it was sadlyring-barked by a vandal–this meant the tree was destined to die slowly. Our neighbour instead had the tree properly felled and donated it to our circle."

The artwork for the Yarning Circle signage was also donated, with local Wiradjuri artist Kris Khamis designing the sign.
