Patients at Epworth Eastern will have a virtual window to the outside world in the Melbourne hospital's newly-expanded intensive care unit (ICU).
Each patient room features state-of-the-art immersive digital screens, which provide calming images or even family photographs.
Epworth Eastern's ICU Nurse Unit Manager, Natasha Ciampoli, said the interactive screens could help reduce delirium and improve patients' wellbeing.
"We understand the transformative power of a healing environment that caters to the unique needs of our critically-ill patients," Ms Ciampoli said.
"The cutting-edge digital screens in our ICU rooms represent a ground-breaking development.
"By harnessing advanced technology, we enhance the patient experience while mitigating delirium and nurturing a profound sense of connection and engagement."
The ICU refurbishment is the latest stage in the $162 million redevelopment of the Epworth HealthCare facility.
New patient wards, day oncology and endoscopy units have already opened, along with new operating theatres – including a $2 million hybrid theatre for cardiac, thoracic, vascular and minimally-invasive operations.
Epworth Eastern's interim Executive General Manager, Pauline Fogarty, said staff were excited by the opening of the expanded ICU, which also includes an isolation room for protecting vulnerable patients.
"After months of tireless dedication and collaboration, we are thrilled to be able to care for patients in the unit," Ms Fogarty said.
"The expanded and modernised ICU features four additional beds, including a dedicated negative pressure room."
ICU Director Dr Zia Ansari said staff also benefited from the redesigned space.
"We also prioritise the wellbeing of our dedicated healthcare professionals," he said.
"The Level 2 Arnold Wing ICU redevelopment creates a more supportive work environment, addressing challenges such as lack of natural light and excessive noise levels.
"This enables our staff to provide exceptional care, while maintaining their wellbeing."
