Mayan Byrnes, 23, has been Senior Human Resources Officer with Mildura Health Private Hospital (MHPH) in north-west Victoria for more than a year.
What's the best part about your job?
Being able to build relationships and support managers to assemble teams of empowered staff who are driven to reach their full potential.
What is something about your job that not many people know about, and what would surprise other people about working in a private hospital?
In my role within a smaller hospital environment, it is a true generalist HR practice. I am involved in a diverse range of duties and incentives, making my work dynamic and fulfilling.
What may surprise others about working in a private hospital is the scope for further training and learning, even within a small team. Despite our size, employee development and opportunities for growth and advancement is prioritised. Moreover, in the private hospital setting, individual voices are often heard clearly, and everyone's contributions are valued. It creates a collaborative and supportive atmosphere!
What do you love about working in a private hospital?
My passion for the healthcare industry makes working in a private hospital incredibly fulfilling. Collaborating with dedicated individuals on the front lines, who are passionate about serving the community's health, is inspiring.
My experience in the industry started as a ward clerk, which over time led me to the human resources function. When interviewing potential new employees for our private hospital, I take pride in highlighting its ownership by our health fund and local members, emphasising the focus on exceptional service. As a member myself, with strong connections to the local community, I am proud to work at MHPH and value the positive feedback we receive.
What do you like to do outside of work and/or what is something your colleagues don't know about you?
I enjoy staying active at the gym, playing netball and spending time with family and friends! I do have a guilty pleasure of watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians weekly.
What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?
Always do what you're afraid to do.
