Westmead Private Hospital has added a new arm to its growing body of robotic devices, as it continues to invest in improving patient outcomes.
The Sydney facility has unveiled its new Mako system, which helps surgeons achieve new levels of precision in orthopaedic procedures.
The advanced robotic arm is designedto increase the accuracy of partial and total knee and hip replacements.
"The Mako robot can enhance my ability to provide the best care possible as the patient undergoes their knee replacement journey," orthopaedic surgeon Dr Bijoy Thomas said.
The system uses advanced imaging and mapping technology to create a 3D model of the patient's knee.
"This allows for highly-accuratepersonalised preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance," Dr Thomas said.
"The robotic arm helps to precisely cut andtherebyplace the components, leading to better alignment, fit and placementof the implants."
Westmead Private Hospital has delivered a number of landmark procedures since installing its first robotic system in 2013.
It introduced the ROSA total knee replacement technology in 2019, and upgraded its da Vinci robot to the latest Xi model the following year.
"The Mako robot has features that are designed to cause less trauma to the surrounding soft tissues compared to traditional surgical techniques," Dr Thomas added.
"Minimising soft-tissue damage can result in faster recovery times, less pain, and improved postoperative mobility."
In 2022, Westmead Private became the second hospital in Australia to introduce the ExcelsiusGPS robotic navigation system for spinal surgery, following another Ramsay Health Care facility, Peninsula Private Hospital in Victoria.
It also uses the Mazor Renaissance robotic system for spinal procedures.
"We're proud to continue investing in leading surgical technology that's designed to improve patient experience and outcomes,"Westmead Private Hospital CEO Mike Flatley said.
