Australia's largest private hospitals operator is taking its environmental goals to a new level.
Ramsay Health Care is aiming to reach 100 million single-use plastic items eliminated from landfill in the next 12 months, having achieved its previous target of 75 million as part of its award-winning sustainability strategy.
"We launched this initiative in 2020,and last February surpassed the 50 millionmark," Ramsay Australia CEO Carmel Monaghan said.
"I'mpleased to confirm we havenowsurpassedourlatest targetof 75 million, andwe'renot stoppinghere.We're now working to remove 100 million plastic items from landfill by March 2025."
The Australian arm of the global grouphasswapped out 12 million medicine cups, over 8.6 million drinking cups and 6.3 million pieces of cutlery for sustainable alternativesas part of its 'Ramsay Cares' strategy.
It has also replaced six million plastic water bottles with water jugs each year since 2021, at its 74 hospitals, clinics and surgical centres across the country.
"We recognise thatsmall changescan go a long wayto creating a healthier planet for generations to come," Ms Monaghan said.
Ramsay has also been introducing alternative power sources to reduce its carbon footprint, having pledged toattain'Net Zero'greenhouse gas emissionsacross its domestic and international operationsby2040.
"Since launching our solar campaign in 2021, our sites havegenerated oversix millionkilowatt hoursof energy," Ms Monaghan said.
"In fostering a culture of environmental consciousness, we hope Ramsay will inspire positive change across the healthcare landscape.
"Wewantto prove that conscious choices can make a significant difference in reducing our impact on the planet."
