Baxter Healthcare's new pharmaceutical compounding centre in Perth will bring a major increase in the supply of life-saving medicines.
Construction works at the site in Canning Vale are complete and production will start when the centre receives its Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) licence.
It will make tailored medicines for patients across Western Australia, including life-saving cancer treatments, helping to expand Baxter's output in the state by more than 50 percent.
"We look forward to beginning production out of this new facility in the coming months and further expanding our supply of compounded medicines to treat Western Australian patients right across the state," said Brendan Cummins, Baxter Healthcare 's General Manager for Australia and New Zealand.
Baxter expects to increase its 60-strong Western Australian workforce with another 20 new highly-skilled pharmaceutical manufacturing jobs in the first three years.
"For more than 20 years, Baxter's local employees have proudly served the Western Australian healthcare system, producing chemotherapy treatments and essential nutrition and antibiotics used in the delivery of both hospital and home-based care," Mr Cummins said.
"Thanks to the support of the Government of Western Australia's Investment Attraction Fund, this brand-new pharmaceutical compounding facility links Western Australia with Baxter's national network of TGA-licensed compounding operations, supplying critical patient treatments, and securing local jobs."
The project received $4 million in funding from the state government, as part of Premier Roger Cook's plan to diversify Western Australia's economy and establish a leading role in the country's medical manufacturing.
"Baxter Healthcare's new facility is the best in the nation and means we can produce more medicines right here in WA – saving lives and advancing our sovereign capability," Mr Cook said.
Baxter is a Major Sponsor of the Australian Private Hospitals Association.
