Residents in Perth's northern suburbs now have access to world-class cancer care at Glengarry Private Hospital.
The Ramsay Health Care facility has officially opened its new purpose-built $3.2 million Waratah Infusion Suite, which gives patients the option of chemotherapy treatment on-site.
Previously they would have to travel 15 kilometres into the central city for private chemotherapy.
"While Glengarry Private Hospital has been serving the local community for almost 50 years now, this is the first time we have offered chemotherapy," CEO Steve Cohen-Jones said.
"Some of Australia's top oncologists, led by pioneer and leader in innovative cancer care, Dr Andrew Dean, have joined us, giving locals access to leading-edge medical oncology treatments.
"Time is of the essence when it comes to treating cancer and our rapid-access service enables GPs to refer newly-diagnosed patients for a same-day or next-day oncologist consult."
Mr Cohen-Jones said patients would benefit from the combined cancer care resources of Glengarry and Nedlands-based sister site Hollywood Private Hospital, offering the skills of nurses, allied health, support staff and volunteers.
"Together, the doctors, staff and volunteers form a first-class team – experts in their field who bring with them skill, experience, compassion and understanding," Mr Cohen-Jones said.
With cancer care often requiring regular hospital visits, having treatment available closer to home reduces the physical and emotional burden on patients and their families and friends.
Duncraig-based Glengarry Private Hospital, which offers free on-site parking, also hopes to join Ramsay's other 21 sites running cancer clinical trials.
"Ramsay is aiming to improve patient outcomes through high-quality care, expanding access to oncology services and pushing the boundaries in new treatments and research," Mr Cohen-Jones said.
"With oncologists available on-site every weekday, patients can be assured of rapid, expert care when they need it most."
