People in southern Sydney can now access more advanced eye treatment closer to home at Ramsay Surgical Centre Miranda.

It is the first hospital in the Sutherland Shire to introduce the Alcon Unity surgical system, which allows surgeons to perform complex vitreoretinal procedures to treat serious eye conditions.

Designed to support greater surgical precision and efficiency, the technology helps to improve patient outcomes and recovery.

"Being able to deliver this level of care locally is incredibly important," ophthalmologist Dr James Leong said.

Dr Leong is one of seven ophthalmologists credentialed at the Ramsay Health Care facility to use the technology, expanding the centre's ability to provide specialist eye surgery for patients across the region.

"It means patients can receive advanced treatment closer to home, supported by a familiar care team, which makes a real difference to their experience and recovery," he said.

The Miranda centre is a dedicated day procedure facility located near Kareena Private Hospital, also run by Ramsay.

Australia's largest private hospitals operator said it expected the new eye technology would support the treatment of hundreds of patients each year, helping to meet growing demand and evolving healthcare needs across the Sutherland Shire community.

It opened Ramsay Surgical Centre Miranda more than a decade ago, giving thousands of patients access to day surgery services across a range of specialties also including gastroenterology, urology and general surgery.
