San marks 500 robotic-assisted knee replacements

Sydney Adventist Hospital (the San) has reached a significant milestone in robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery, completing its 500th VELYS robotic-assisted knee replacement.

The landmark procedure was performed by Head of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr Ali Gursel, highlighting the continued growth of the hospital's robotic surgery program and its commitment to advancing precision medicine.

Since the introduction of the VELYS robotic-assisted system, the San has expanded its orthopaedic robotics capability, providing patients with personalised surgical planning and enhanced precision during knee replacement procedures. Dr Gursel has performed 320 of the hospital's 500 VELYS procedures and has played a key role in establishing and developing the program.

The milestone also reflects the contribution of the hospital's broader orthopaedic team, including Dr Nagamori, Dr Lin and Dr Gooden, who have helped drive the successful adoption of the technology.

Beyond the operating theatre, the achievement recognises the multidisciplinary teams whose expertise supports patients throughout every stage of their surgical journey. Staff across sterilisation services, perioperative care, recovery, orthopaedic nursing and rehabilitation have all contributed to the success of the program.

The 500-procedure milestone highlights the important role that innovation and collaborative clinical care continue to play in improving outcomes for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.
