New treatment options for a rapidly-rising disease affecting women are now available to patients across the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales.
John Flynn Private Hospital has introduced a leading women's health specialist to deliver cutting-edge, robot-assisted surgery for endometriosis.
One-in-seven Australian women suffer from the condition, where tissue from the womb grows in other parts of the body – such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
It can cause crippling pain, and there is no cure – just treatments to ease the symptoms, including painkillers and surgery.
Dr Mikhail Sarofim, an experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist, is the first to offer robot-assisted procedures as the main remedy for endometriosis at John Flynn Private Hospital.
"I believe in offering women a tailored approach to their health care and, with this advanced technology and the right training, gynaecologists can offer patients more options for their health management," he said.
Dr Sarofim said robotic surgery, using the da Vinci system, supported shorter operations and better recovery.
"Designed for minimally-invasive procedures, it can help to reduce operative times and enhance recovery and outcomes for women," he said.
Endometriosis is a chronic condition that often starts during puberty, and it can continue through to old age.
John Flynn Private Hospital announced the arrival of its robot-assisted gynaecological surgery options last month during the annual global campaign to highlight the disease and its symptoms.
"March was Endometriosis Awareness Month and it's with great excitement that we welcome Dr Sarofim and our new robotic surgical offering," CEO Joanne Mitchell said.
"Dr Sarofim is a leading obstetrician and women's health specialist, who has completed extensive training in order to be able to manage complex gynaecological conditions including severe endometriosis."
