Advanced eye care for South Brisbane

Tuesday 6th August, 2024

People in Brisbane's southern suburbs can now access advanced vision care thanks to the arrival of a new service at Eye-Tech Day Surgeries Southside.

The Cura Day Hospitals Group facility has started offering vitreoretinal surgery – a highly-specialised field involving delicate and intricate operations to treat conditions in the rear of the eye.

"Eye-Tech Day Surgeries Southside will be one of the few private day hospitals in the South Brisbane region capable of offering this specialised service, and there are a growing number of patients wanting to access this care in this region,"Cura Day Hospitals Group CEO Peter Freeleagus said.

"There is real demand in Brisbane's south to provide this service, so we've taken a significant step to ensure the community can access this top-tier eye care without additional barriers."

Jasmin Harris, Eye-Tech Day Surgeries Southside's CEO and Director of Nursing, said many staff already had "substantial experience" in vitreoretinalprocedures.

"And for those who are new to this field, we've provided comprehensive in-service education," she added.

"We were also able to facilitate staff opportunities to observe procedures at other Cura facilities to ensure their proficiency."

Cura, one of Australia's leading short-stay healthcare operators, has previously introduced vitreoretinal services at Ipswich Day Hospital and Sydney's Liverpool Eye Surgery.

Eye-Tech Day Surgeries Southside anticipates taking on 50 to 100 cases each year, with specialist surgeons using its advanced Alcon Constellation vision system, Resight viewing system, and new Zeiss microscope to perform procedures.

"Eye-Tech Day Surgeries Southside is dedicated to providing world-class eye care, and the addition of vitreoretinal surgery is a testament to our commitment to offering the best possible treatments to patients," Ms Harris said.

"We believe that every individual deserves the best eye care available, and we are here to provide that."

People concerned about their vision can see their local general practitioner or optometrist for a check-up and ask to be referred to an ophthalmologist who operates at Eye-Tech Day Surgeries Southside.
