Brisbane hospital's 'remarkable' achievement

Tuesday 20th August, 2024

The heart care team at Greenslopes Private Hospital has celebrated a significant milestone after a 91-year-old became the 500thpatient to benefit from a potentially life-saving valve procedure.

Sydney Owens from Stradbroke Island near Moreton Bay had been suffering from severe aortic stenosis – a restriction of blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body – for a number of years.

He was treated by Dr Peter Hadjipetrou with a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure – a minimally-invasive alternative to open-heart surgery.

"This marks a significant milestone in our commitment to providing advanced cardiac care and innovation," Dr Hadjipetrou said.

"TAVI is designed to offer patients improved quality of life and faster recovery times with less surgical trauma.

"Our use of the latest technology and techniques in TAVI reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation in cardiac care and offering cutting-edge treatments designed to provide patients the best possible outcomes."

Greenslopes Private Hospital introduced the TAVI procedure in 2018 and performed its 250th case three years later.

"This accomplishment would not have been possible without the expertise and dedication of our exceptional cardiac team," Dr Hadjipetrou said.

"Their skill and commitment to excellence is integral to helping our patients receive the best possible treatment for their heart conditions."

He said the Brisbane hospital's custom-built hybrid cardiac catheterisation lab and operating theatre allowed the team to progress routine cases into more complex ones during the same operation, in the same location if needed.

"When a patient presents at the Greenslopes Private Hospital emergency department with cardiac or vascular concerns, we can see them right through their emergency care, their procedures and post-op rehabilitation in one place," Dr Hadjipetrou said.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sydney and all our patients, their families, and our entire healthcare team for their support and collaboration. Together, we have achieved something remarkable at Greenslopes Private Hospital."
