Prasant Baral - Friendly Society Private Hospital

Tuesday 5th November, 2024

Prasant Baral, 30, has worked at Friendly Society Private Hospital in Bundaberg for three years, and has been in his current role of Systems Administrator since June 2024 having started there as a support technician.

What's the best part about your job?

As a systems administrator, my role is dynamic and rewarding. I'm constantly learning new things due to the rapid pace of technological advancements. Problem-solving is a daily challenge, but it's incredibly satisfying to overcome complex issues.

My work directly impacts the team's productivity, and it's fulfilling to see the positive results. I appreciate the autonomy I have in my role, which allows me to be creative and take initiative. It's especially rewarding to see my team members grow and succeed in their careers.

What is something about your job that not many people know about, and what would surprise other people about working in a private hospital?

As a systems administrator in a private hospital, one aspect of my job that many people might not know about is the critical role I play in ensuring the hospital's IT infrastructure functions seamlessly. This is essential for accurate diagnoses, timely treatments, and overall patient safety.

Another surprising aspect of working in a private hospital is the level of security and compliance that is involved. Due to the sensitive nature of patient data, we have strict protocols in place to protect against cyber threats and ensure compliance with industry regulations. This requires constant vigilance and a deep understanding of cybersecurity best practices.

What do you love about working in a private hospital?

I love the variety, challenge, and collaborative environment that comes with working in a private hospital. Unlike government hospitals, where roles can be more narrowly defined and limited to specific systems, private institutions often require systems administrators to have a broader scope of responsibilities. This allows for greater opportunities to learn and work with a variety of technologies, fostering a more dynamic and stimulating work environment.

Additionally, my team-mates are incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic about their work, which makes for a positive and productive work culture. We constantly share knowledge and support each other in our professional development, creating a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.

What do you like to do outside of work and/or what is something your colleagues don't know about you?

Outside of work, I'm a passionate drone pilot with a love for photography and videography. It's a great way for me to explore new perspectives and capture the world around me.

One unusual thing about me as an ICT professional might be that I'm not a big fan of computer games. I've even tried to watch Star Wars a few times but just couldn't get into it!

And if you're curious about something my colleagues might not know, I'll share a little secret: my first job was actually as an accountant back in Nepal. Who knew, right?

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

The best piece of advice I've ever received came from Jon Smith at Aryon Technology Solutions, our MSP. After starting as a Level 1 support technician at FSPH in November 2021, I was promoted to Level 2 in September 2023 and then to Systems Administrator in June of this year.

Jon's advice was to maintain a cautious optimism. He emphasised the importance of knowing my limits and being honest about what I do and don't know. Over time, experience has built my confidence and understanding, and I've learned that it's okay to admit when I don't have an answer. Trying to fake it can lead to bigger problems.
