$65 million Adelaide health precinct gets planning consent

Tuesday 7th October, 2025

Burnside Hospital's new Health Precinct is scheduled to open in 2028

Adelaide's Burnside Hospital is ready to go ahead with its new $65 million Health Precinct Project, after the development was given planning consent by the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP).

The report to SCAP noted the precinct was consistent with the zone's intent to provide healthcare facilities and represented a "logical intensification" of development.

The report also praised the proposed design, noting it "effectively mitigated the visual impacts of the building".

Burnside Hospital CEO Alan Morrison said the approval marked a major milestone for both the precinct and for healthcare infrastructure in South Australia.

"We are naturally delighted with the outcome, as it reflects the enormous amount of work that has gone into our proposal, both in terms of being sensitive to our surrounding community and in delivering the services that are needed," he said.

"With the range of services this investment will deliver, we will be meeting growing demand for quality healthcare services and underscoring Burnside Hospital's ability to care for our community for decades to come."

Located adjacent to Burnside Hospital on Kensington Road, Adelaide, and linked by a footbridge, the new precinct will offer comprehensive cancer care, increasing the private not-for-profit facility's chemotherapy treatment services by 33 percent.

It will also provide a linear accelerator for radiation treatment of cancer patients.

Two new operating theatres will help meet growing demand for day surgery, complementing the five existing theatres.

The new precinct will also introduce expanded health offerings including diagnostic imaging, and pathology.

Several specialists will move into the new building from the current hospital grounds, alongside a new fertility service.

The new precinct will also have three levels of underground parking.

The development is being designed and constructed by health infrastructure specialists Cambridge Medical Property.

The build process is expected to take between 18-24 months, with the first patients likely to be welcomed early 2028.
