Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) has been recognised for its commitment to environmental sustainability, while its focus on staff training support is also bringing rewards.
The Perth-based site, which is run by Australia's largest private hospitals operator Ramsay Health Care, won the National Sustainability category at the 2025 Hospitality in Healthcare Awards.
The JHC Environmental Services Waste Management team followed up its success at the Western Australia Hospitality in Healthcare Sustainability Awards.
Environmental Manager Amit Chauhan said JHC had significantly reduced its operational impact over the past five years by maximising the diversion of waste from landfill, as part of Ramsay's global sustainability strategy.
"Through a range of initiatives and the successful implementation of 30 distinct waste streams, the hospital has achieved an impressive 44 percent diversion rate in the first half of 2025," he said.
"The goal is to reach 50 percent by 2026, a target that reflects our campus' strong commitment to sustainability."
JHC Waste Management Supervisor Jodie Mallia is part of a team dedicated to finding alternative disposal options to landfill.
"For over seven years we have donated surplus food to OzHarvest, a food rescue charity which supports those in need in our community, and we phased out single-use plastics in catering prior to it being mandated in Western Australia," Mr Chauhan said.
"More recently, a dedicated stream for single-use ECG cables and wires was introduced in JHC's Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Departments, further expanding the hospital's recycling capabilities."
Mr Chauhan said he was proud the wider campus, which has Joondalup Private Hospital co-located with a public facility, had worked together to support the team's initiatives.
"It has taken a long-term, collaborative effort to achieve this noticeable shift in staff engagement and compliance," he said.

JHC Emergency Department Registrar Dr Lorna Cronin
Meanwhile, JHC's Dr Lorna Cronin has been awarded The Buchanan Prize by the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine, given to the best candidate in the Fellowship Clinical Examination.
The Emergency Department (ED) Registrar shared the honour with two doctors from Queensland who also topped the Objective Structured Clinical Examination – the last exam required to achieve Fellowship status with the College.
"I was initially in disbelief. It really is the cherry on top after completing this part of my formal training," said Dr Cronin, who started at JHC as an ED Resident Medical Officer in 2017.
"It's a very supportive department to do training and there is such a great sense of camaraderie," she added.
"Even when things are difficult, staff are in a good mood and understanding of one another. I also love the variety of patients, from children to the elderly, and the diversity of cases, including trauma and obstetrics cases."
JHC is accredited for 24 months of advanced training in Emergency Medicine as well as offering rotations in critical care, general medicine and surgical specialities.
Dr Sjinene Van Schalkwyk, Co-Head of Emergency Medicine, said Dr Cronin would continue to work at JHC as an Emergency Specialist.
"Her success, as well as the successful completion of JHC emergency doctors every year in our Primary, Fellowship and Emergency Medicine Associate Training programs (EMATP), demonstrate the importance our Emergency Department places on the training and education of our medical staff, and the dedication of our education team in supporting them along their chosen career path," Dr Van Schalkwyk said.
JHC is undergoing a major expansion, with Joondalup Private Hospital to get an extra 52 beds as part of its $190 million redevelopment.
To meet growing demand for services, it has employed 79 permanent nurses in 2025 as part of Ramsay's Graduate Pathway Program, on-boarding a record 48 new starters on one day.
