Technology described as "game-changing" is being used at Epworth Eastern in the early detection and treatment of cancer.

It is the first hospital in Victoria to provide ongoing services using the new Canon Aplio i800 endoscopic ultrasound processor, which arrived from Europe in late 2025.

Epworth gastroenterologist Dr Paul Urquhart said the cutting-edge device had enhanced the range of technology being used in the Melbourne private hospital's dedicated endoscopy suite.

"The high-definition imaging generated by the new processor is game-changing," he said.

The technology is used in endoscopy and endobronchial scans, which involve a long camera with an ultrasound probe being inserted through the patient's mouth to generate imaging of the patient's internal organs and tissues, including the lungs, pancreas, bile ducts and gall bladder.

It is used for inspection and diagnosis, as well as therapeutic procedures such as needle biopsies and draining abscesses or collections.

"When performing an endoscopic ultrasound, the most important aspect is the quality of the imaging – how clearly we can see the target organs," Dr Urquhart said.

"Clearer images enable a more accurate assessment of the internal organs and the likely problem.

"This can make diagnosis easier and more precise, which in turn improves decision-making around treatment.

"It's about ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients."

Harley Ambrose, Epworth Eastern's Endoscopy Nurse Unit Manager, estimated the hospital had performed more than 100,000 diagnostic, therapeutic and bronchial procedures since starting endoscopy services more than 25 years ago.

"We continually adopt the latest technology to ensure our patients receive the highest quality care and most accurate diagnostics," he said.
