$16 million expansion to meet rising demand in Sydney's south

Saturday 28th February, 2026

St George Private Hospital is adding two fully-equipped operating theatres

Patients in Southern Sydney can expect to see major benefits from the major expansion project now under way at St George Private Hospital.

Construction has started on the $16.4 million redevelopment, which will significantly increase the Ramsay Health Care facility's capacity to perform a wider range of complex procedures.

"Our primary focus is always on delivering the best possible care for our patients," St George Private Hospital CEO David Crowe said.

"This expansion is a direct response to the growing demand for our surgical services and reflects our dedication to ensuring that our community has access to safe, reliable, and high-quality healthcare when they need it most."

The expansion will add two fully-equipped operating theatres, bringing the Kogarah-based hospital's total number to 18, as well as two theatre spaces ready for future fitting.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will be relocated to level 2 to make space for the new theatres, which are expected to be operational in early 2027.

The expansion is designed to benefit patients requiring care in specialties including general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgery, and gynaecology.

The increased theatre capacity will give more patients access to timely procedures, while also helping St George Private Hospital to retain existing surgeons – who will be able to perform more procedures at one trusted location – and attract new specialists to the region.

"We understand that for our patients, consistent outcomes and reliability are paramount," Mr Crowe said.

"This investment is about strengthening our hospital for the long term, ensuring we can continue to offer cutting-edge treatments and compassionate care.

"It's about making deliberate, informed decisions based on evidence that directly impact people's lives positively."
