The opening of Avive Clinic Melbourne marks an exciting milestone for the private hospital sector, delivering 32 new mental health beds, with plans to expand to 60 beds as demand grows.
The state-of-the-art facility represents a significant investment in mental health infrastructure and will provide residents with access to specialist inpatient treatment, psychiatrist consulting, outpatient day programs and innovative treatment options, all within a purpose-designed therapeutic environment.
With Melbourne's northern suburbs already home to around one million people and another 500,000 residents forecast by 2046, the new hospital is a welcome addition to a community experiencing growing demand for accessible, high-quality mental health services.
Located on Old Heidelberg Road in Alphington, the hospital has been thoughtfully designed with patient comfort, wellbeing and recovery at its heart.
The contemporary facility features private rooms with ensuites, landscaped gardens, four purpose-built group therapy rooms, five psychiatrist consulting suites and two transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment suites.
Patients will benefit from multidisciplinary care delivered by psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses and allied health professionals, with treatment pathways designed to support continuity of care before, during and after admission.
The hospital will provide specialist treatment for adults experiencing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma-related conditions and other complex mental health presentations.
Avive Health Co-Founder and Co-CEO Greg Procter said the opening was an important step towards addressing the growing demand for specialist mental health services.
"Melbourne's northern suburbs are rapidly expanding and continue to face a shortage of quality private mental health care. Melburnians, and Victorians, deserve timely access to high-quality mental health care delivered in environments designed specifically for recovery," Mr Procter said.
"Avive Clinic Melbourne builds on the success of our Mount Eliza hospital, bringing together inpatient care, day programs, private consulting and innovative treatment pathways within one connected mental health ecosystem."
The opening is also a fantastic example of what can be achieved through partnerships and private sector investment in essential health infrastructure.
Working alongside Australian Unity Healthcare Property Trust, Avive Health has transformed a former aged care facility into a modern specialist mental health hospital, giving the property a new purpose in supporting the health and wellbeing of the local community.
Chris Smith, General Manager Property at Australian Unity, welcomed the opening and the long-term benefits it will deliver.
"We're proud of our long-term partnership with specialist mental health provider Avive. For decades to come, this hospital will provide many benefits to the local community, clinicians and our investors, with opportunity to expand the site as demand grows," Mr Smith said.
The new Alphington hospital is Avive Health's third hospital nationally and its second in Victoria, joining the established 60-bed Avive Clinic Mornington Peninsula in Mount Eliza, which opened in December 2023.
Together, the two Victorian hospitals strengthen the state's private mental health care network and demonstrate Avive Health's ongoing commitment to expanding access to specialist treatment.
At a time when demand for mental health services continues to grow, investments like Avive Clinic Melbourne are an important reminder of the vital contribution private hospitals make to Australia's healthcare system.
The opening is a win for patients, families and the broader community, delivering additional capacity, greater choice and more opportunities for Victorians to access the mental health support they need, when they need it.
