Rebecca Kate Targett has been Clinical Governance Coordinator – Southern Region at Cura Day Hospitals Group since June 2022, having previously been a facility-based Quality Coordinator for seven years.
What's the best part about your job?
Being able to assist CEOs and Directors of Nursing with Quality Performance Systems for their facilities, and providing education and training to help understand everyone's roles in providing safe, high-quality care. One of the best things is that you can be creative, think outside the box and always question the process.
What is something about your job that not many people know about, and what would surprise other people about working in a private hospital?
Clinical governance coordination is a newish role in healthcare, which is innovative and continually developing. You don't have to be a nurse to undertake and thrive in the role. It is about developing and assisting leaders to have systems and processes in place to meet high-quality standards. Project development and problem-solving happens regularly.
What may surprise other people about working in a private hospital is how many multi-skilled people come together to provide care that really matters to each patient.
What do you love about working in a private hospital?
Smaller/specialised facilities who work very closely and in collaboration with a multi-skilled workforce. Working together as a coordinated team are not only other nurses and doctors, but administrative teams, ward clerks, CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department) technicians, bookkeepers, and finance.
This collaboration extends to the consultation rooms, pathology units, health funds and other external services who assist in providing individualised care to each patient.
What do you like to do outside of work and/or what is something your colleagues don't know about you?
I am very lucky to be living on a beautiful horse stud in Tasmania, literally surrounded by horses, and cannot wait to get my daughter her own pony one day.
What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?
These are two things I have been shown that encourage me to be kind, considerate and assist in bringing out the best in myself and others:
- In most cases, people want to do the right thing and want to do a good job, we just have to help them.
- Be 'above the line' – which I learnt from Conscious Leadership. It means be open, curious and committed to learning.
