Claire Thomson has been General Manager/Director Of Nursing at Melbourne's Manningham Private Hospital, part of the Nexus group, since 2022.
What's the best part about your job?
I love my job and it's a massive part of who I am. It sounds cliché, but it really is all about the people you work with and over the past 25 years – I have been so fortunate to have worked alongside some of the most amazing people.
In my current role, the sense of shared purpose amongst the team is energizing. Leading a team of highly-skilled and compassionate clinicians who are deeply committed to delivering exceptional care is incredibly fulfilling. Every day brings a chance to improve outcomes and experiences, not just for patients but also for our team.
What is something about your job that not many people know about, and what would surprise other people about working in a private hospital?
Many people don't realise the level of strategic planning and operational detail that goes into running a private day hospital, and it all must be juggled around whatever you are facing in the current moment.
There are so many opportunities in private hospitals – you just have to want it, explore opportunities, work hard and challenge yourself to learn something new every day.
What do you love about working in a private hospital?
Some days I take a moment to imagine the hospital with a 'bird's-eye view'. For me, taking this time is an important part of my role. I reflect on the team – everyone knows their role and they work together to ensure no-one is left behind.
There's a unique agility in the private sector and I love working with like-minded people who thrive in this environment.
What do you like to do outside of work and/or what is something your colleagues don't know about you?
From ceramics through to photography, I love all things art – but I'm not very good at any of it. I am obsessed with flowers and plants – but can't seem to grow them. I enjoy yoga and Pilates – but I'm uncoordinated and have terrible balance.
Outside of work, my world revolves around my family. I'm a proud mother to two teenage girls who keep life busy, fun and always a little unpredictable.
What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?
A few years ago, I was quoted the '5 balls of life' speech by Coca-Cola's former CEO. I was reminded that only I could keep the four glass balls safe but the team around me could (and did) help me to keep the rubber ball in the air.
I often reflect on this – not only for myself but for the team around me. Everyone has their own story, their own challenges. In life, there is nothing more important than kindness.
